The Social and Emotional Learning Approach. Why and How?

Sviluppare le competenze sociali ed emotive nella lezione di inglese.

Ebbene sì, l’apprendimento è anche una questione di emozioni. Può capitare che il clima emotivo in aula non sia del tutto positivo limitando così il desiderio dei bambini e delle bambine di interagire e di apprendere. A volte, gli insegnanti vengono sopraffatti da pensieri e difficoltà che possono condizionare le loro reazioni al comportamento degli studenti e delle studentesse. Risulta fondamentale, quindi, che sia gli insegnanti che gli allievi ed allieve posseggano gli strumenti adeguati a gestire le proprie emozioni.

Cos’è l’apprendimento sociale ed emotivo?
L’apprendimento socio-emotivo (SEL) si riferisce all’educazione ai sentimenti, un approccio che consente di gestire le proprie emozioni e, di conseguenza, di migliorare le relazioni con gli altri.

L’apprendimento socio-emotivo è spesso suddiviso in cinque competenze principali:

• Consapevolezza di sé: essere in grado di identificare e comprendere le proprie emozioni
• Autogestione: essere in grado di gestire le proprie emozioni e i propri comportamenti
• Consapevolezza sociale: essere in grado di comprendere le opinioni degli altri
• Abilità relazionali: capacità di instaurare relazioni positive con gli altri
• Processo decisionale responsabile: la capacità di prendere decisioni ponderate e ben informate.

Sappiamo bene che le emozioni incidono sull’apprendimento e che lo stress può ridurre notevolmente il rendimento scolastico; risulta importante sviluppare competenze per gestire in modo proattivo le emozioni negative e per favorire il successo dei nostri allievi e delle nostre allieve.

Per avere un miglior rendimento scolastico le bambine e i bambini hanno bisogno di poter contare sulle proprie abilità interpersonali e intrapersonali. In definitiva, perché è importante inserire nelle lezioni di inglese attività di apprendimento socio-emotivo? Perché la collaborazione, l’interazione e la comunicazione sono al centro della didattica L2.

The Social and Emotional Learning Approach. Why and How?

We all know that learning is a matter of emotions. Often the emotional environment in the classroom is not positive, thus limiting children’s will to interact and learn. Sometimes, teachers are overwhelmed with thoughts and difficulties that influence our reaction to our pupils’ behavior. In short, both teachers and children must have the tools to manage emotions efficiently.

What is social and emotional learning?

Social-emotional learning (SEL) refers to education about feelings, an approach that allows people to manage their emotions and thus improve relationships with others.

Social-emotional learning is often broken down into 5 main skills:

• Self awareness – being able to identify and understand one’s emotions
• Self management – being able to manage one’s emotions and behaviors
• Social awareness – being able to understand other people’s views
• Relationship skills – the ability to have positive relationships with others
• Responsible decision making – the ability to make well-informed decisions

Over the past few decades, our horizons of how to optimize learning has broadened, and academic research has acknowledged that emotions matter. Stress can significantly reduce academic performance and therefore it becomes essential to develop skills to effectively manage negative emotions to make students able to succeed.

To perform better at school, children need life skills such as interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. So, why include social-emotional learning activities in the primary English classroom? Because interaction, communication and cooperation are at the center of L2 teaching.
